Micro Current Neurofeedback

Micro Current Neurofeedback

What is Micro Current Neurofeedback?

Micro Current Neurofeedback (MCN) is an innovative variant of transcranial neurofeedback and differs from traditional neurofeedback in that it does not involve feedback visuals or auditory perceptions.

While traditional neurofeedback focuses on re-training the brain, MCN disentrains the brain and autoregulates the central nervous system by allowing it to reorganize itself and shift from fixed patterns.

IASIS Micro Current Neurofeedback is a holistic treatment approach that is:

  • FDA registered
  • Non-pharmaceutical, drug-free
  • Non-invasive
  • Safe
  • Effective

The source of the problem, not the symptoms, are treated through brief micro current stimulation to the nervous system resulting in temporary fluctuation in brainwaves. This change, or fluctuation, is what allows the brain to reorganize and shift.

Over time, frozen or stuck patterns are affected and the result is a “reboot” to the system as new neural pathways are made. This creates changes to the brainwave state and greater ability for the brain and nervous system to regulate itself.

Who is Micro Current Feedback for?

Micro Current Neurofeedback offers a wide spectrum of benefits those suffering from a dysregulated neurological state, and thanks to the gentle, non-invasive, and highly effective nature of MCN, children, adults, and the elderly are all appropriate candidates for treatment.

Understand that each patient’s experience is unique and what they feel and achieve from their treatments is not conclusive or specific to what other patients may experience and feel.

Enduring Changes

85-90% of patients report positive changes within their first three treatment sessions. Mood or condition shifts may be felt such as increased calm, improved focus, and feeling more present.

Due to the cumulative nature of IASIS Micro Current Neurofeedback, these mood or condition shifts may be temporary, but as patients progress through their treatment series, changes observed last longer with each session.

Over the course of treatment, improvements can become substantial and life-changing. Following their initial treatment series, some patients may require “tune-ups” from time to time, however, we know that most benefits experienced become enduring!

This is the result of the brain regaining healthier neurochemical balance, developing more neuroplasticity, and building a natural resistance to returning to a dysfunctional state. This is one of the most common new patient concerns.

Risks and Negative Effects

There are no evidenced risks or long-term negative effects associated with Micro Current Neurofeedback and receiving treatments will not make any condition or symptom worse and cannot cause permanent, negative damage to the brain or nervous system.

Only frozen, stuck patterns are affected. Any healthy, functional brainwave patterns remain flexible and resilient.

What is a Treatment Session like?

Initially, a patient may have 1 to 3 treatments per week dependent on the level of seriousness or acuity of the condition.

The total number of treatments will vary from patient to patient, but a typical range would be a series of 12 to 20 treatments. Recommendations for more treatments are common with longer-standing conditions.

Each patient’s experience and their treatment needs are different. While some patients will notice changes between 1 and 3 sessions, others may require more treatments before they notice any change at all.

As things improve and treatments hold longer, there will be an increase in the time between sessions until these changes become enduringly sustainable and routine treatment is no longer needed.

Beginning Treatment

When patients arrive, they are greeted and welcomed into a relaxing, safe space. A calming, grounding, and private environment are among the top priorities at our office.

You will be brought into a quiet room to be seated. Once you are comfortable, we will prep the areas of your head and neck where EEG electrodes will be placed. You will be educated throughout the process in the beginning so you can better understand the routine of your treatment sessions.

During this time, you will also be asked a series of questions to assess how you are feeling and to identify any signs of reactivity or changes experienced and/or sustained between treatments. This feedback allows us to properly evaluate and make any necessary protocol adjustments before we begin.

Dependent on the patient, their condition, the acuity of that condition, and how they are responding to treatment, adjustments may be made to protocol settings and sensitivity levels throughout the treatment series.

What to Expect

Unlike traditional neurofeedback, MCN does not require the patient to actively participate. This means you can come to your session ready to close your eyes and unwind to a playlist of relaxing music.

And for our littler patients, you’ll enjoy time in our big comfy chair while having a snack and sharing fun stories!

During treatment, the EEG electrodes will be moved around based on your individual treatment plan. These locations may vary through subsequent treatment sessions dependent on overall response and progress.

Contrary to what many think, there is absolutely no zapping, shocking, or electrocuting involved. In fact, you won’t feel anything during treatment!

Duration

From prep to finish, your treatment session will last approximately 30 minutes.

Post-Treatment Response

Like anything in life, the treatment series is a process, and we encourage each patient to practice patience as we navigate this new journey together. Reminding them to always be welcoming and accepting of even the smallest changes.

Keeping notes or having a dedicated journal during the treatment series helps to build self-awareness while deepening the value of each treatment session. This also helps us to identify and discuss things to be aware of including possible shifts you may be experiencing, as well as other ways to support your brain and body post-session.

Temporary Reactivity

Temporary reactivity of the nervous system can occur in the first 24 to 48 hours following treatment.

While this does not occur in most, and oftentimes is not experienced at all, it is still very important to properly educate our patients on.

Reactivity includes feelings of fatigue, spaciness, anxiousness, being wired, headaches, or potential (temporary) increases in condition/symptom. Experiencing reactivity can be uncomfortable and discouraging, however, it is temporary and will subside. It is not permanent and will not persist.

In fact, we educate our patients in understanding that reactivity is actually a positive sign that your brain and nervous system are beginning to respond. This is known as neuroregulation. This is the brain demonstrating that “something good is happening” and that every subset of a reaction is a positive response!

Rest assured, if you do experience any unpleasant feelings between treatments, I am always available to discuss what is going on and to administer a brief, gentle treatment to calm the nervous system and help bring about homeostasis.
